Wine Clubs Providing Regular Health Benefits

Those who love red wine may find more reason to drink it after a study conducted by scientists at the University of California, Davis. These scientists believe that chemicals, called saponins, may have the ability lower cholesterol. Saponins work to reduce cholesterol by binding together to prevent absorption of cholesterol. Dr. Andrew Waterhouse, a professor at UC Davis and an expert in wine chemistry, is a large proponent of this argument. He states that red wines, such as those selected by wine clubs, contain three to ten times as much saponins as white wines. Saponins originate in the skins of grapes and red wines have longer contact with the skins than white wines. The study lists Red Zinfandel with the highest level of saponins. Syrahs have the next highest level of saponins and Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon have equal amounts of saponins. Saponins are being found in several different types of food, including olive oil and soybeans. This adds to the list of health benefits that are being traced to red wine.

Studies have also found red wine to reduce risk of heart disease. The compounds catechins and resveratrol, called polyphenols, which are found in red wines, are linked to the reduction of heart disease. The resveratrol, which protects grapes from fungal infections, has beneficial properties that have anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects. The catechins contain antioxidant and anti-cancer properties.

Those who wish to enjoy a fine and relaxing glass of red wine and the health benefits that come along with it can do so regularly by joining one of the many available and excellent wine clubs that deliver only the very best of both red and white wines to their members.
